Don't always believe the reviews. Excellent service from one of the servers. Had chicken fajitas and it was great.. Not many "proper" Mexican restaurants in the Purdue area!! Requested for some extra sour cream and got a whole tub of it, going to regret that in the morning...

This place is disgusting. It's basically a health code violation just waiting to happen. I visited with some friends on Tuesday (cinco de mayo), and it was a mess. We waited over 30 minutes for a table, and when the hostess walked us to our table there were only two chairs there for our group of 6. After waiting for about 5 minutes for someone to finally drag some chairs over, it took another 5+ minutes to get menus. They also had a live DJ who was pretty awful and played random techno music way too loudly. This was a BAD atmosphere for a mexican restaurant. I ordered a frozen margarita and a wet burrito. The margarita was RIDICULOUSLY strong! I had to stop drinking it 3/4ths of the way through or I wouldn't have been able to drive home. It really wasn't that good tasting either, and pretty much just tasted like tequila and ice. The wet burrito was giant. Like imagine rolling two Chipotle burritos together into one giant log and then pouring some sauce over it. For $9 I guess it would be a good deal. However, it was the most bland tasting mexican food I have ever tasted in my life. I gave up eating it about 3/4ths of the way through too. Now let's talk about what I would refer to as Montezuma's revenge. This place will give you the most awful stomach ache and diarrhea if you eat the food. My friends wanted to continue the night up state street at Harry's, but all of us had to leave within an hour of arriving because our stomachs hurt so much. I'm pretty sure I had mild food poisoning, but thankfully it cleared up in a couple of days. I'm never going to return to Poblanos. It's not worth the risk of food poisoning, and the food is just not very good at all.

Great food and a great atmosphere. Not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from other than we are in a college town so everyone thinks they are some kind of aficionado . Owner operated this place is great and helps drive business to the levee which this town greatly needs. I go with the loco burrito everyone. Great place to go on Sunday afternoons.

I would eat here again and would recommend it! Though the salsa wasn't very thick the meals were very good. We were a group of six and everyone ordered something different -- all were pleased with their dinners. They came out in no time too! Very nice servers/staff. We shared a pitcher of house margaritas and will say that they were good but that I've had better. Next time I'll try the Texas margaritas -- a couple dollars more per pitcher but probably better. Pleasantly surprised to find this little place.

Walked in at 7:30 on a Tuesday. The place was empty. Sat at the empty bar for ten minutes waiting for someone to serve me. On a plus note when I ordered a small beer they had an unclaimed large beer which they gave me for free. The salsa is not too pretty to look at bit it does have a nice mild flavor to it. The burrito deluxe dinner comes out like typical Mexican street food, not bad but not exploding with flavor. I would come here again.

This Mexican restaurant is the closest to Purdue's campus, and it's definitely one of the cheaper dining options in the area. I came here on a Friday night, and the place was really popular! After I was seated, I saw multiple people being told there was a wait which I think speaks numbers about this place. I had the quesadillas, and the server was very accommodating about my request for corn tortillas instead of flour ones because of an allergy. Even though I was accidentally given chicken quesadillas instead of cheese quesadillas like I'd ordered, I was pretty pleased with the flavor and quality of my meal. Best of all? My total was only $4! As with most Mexican restaurants, we were served tortilla chips and salsa at the beginning of our meal. Honestly, they were both pretty average, but hey, they were free! While this place is by no means fine dining or even casual dining, Poblanos is a great option for quick, low-key Mexican food in the Lafayette area -- especially if you're on a college student budget! The prices, the extensive menu, and the quality of the food will definitely get me to come back again!

I never would have picked this place because of the poor Yelp reviews. A friend asked us to meet up, we said yes, then i checked Yelp to see if any menu items were highly recommended. I assumed I was in for a terrible meal. First, the food was very good, borderline excellent for what it was. The salsa is served cold in a carafe with individual salsa bowls for each person to pour it into and eat from. Never seen this before and I thought it was brilliant. Maybe someone wants cholula in there. Maybe someone is sick and likes to double dip. Maybe it's annoying to have to precariously balance that salsa while pulling your arm back from halfway down the table. Whatever your reason, this is a good system. I do like my salsa at room temp, so it got better to me as it warmed up. My steak fajitas were very good, but the flour tortillas (which I did not order) ended up being better than the corn ones. Much better. Very weird because I generally love corn tortillas. The refried beans were perfect for a Mexican restaurant. Sort of sweet with some white cheese melted on top. The side of rice was also good. Kids eat free on Sundays, so both my kids got free bean burritos. We bring our own crayons and coloring stuff, so I'm not sure if the restaurant has that stuff to offer.. My only problem was the waiter messed up our order in several ways and I didn't have the patience to wait for him to fix everything (which is why I ate the flour tortillas). He fixed the important stuff. Really it might have been the most messed up order I have ever had taken at a restaurant which is why this review could only be 4 stars. But in the end, after having trouble with the order, I really did love the meal and everyone in my party did as well. It's a nice interior layout, a little dark but not problematic when the sun is out. This is a very good restaurant. Maybe the service isn't perfect, but it was good enough if you ask me. Give it a try!

Quite flavorless Mexican food, but it's the only place I saw that delivered through Hungry Boiler. I got the steak tacos and some nachos and dip that cost around 20 bucks. The dip tasted okay, but the queso was very runny and it looked like vomit with all the beef and pico de gallo in it. The tacos were very lacking in the meat department as there wasn't much in it. The guacamole had no flavor and neither did the salsa. It was edible, but not worth the money I spent. I won't be eating here again. ***The day after I ate Poblano's, I had the WORST food poisoning I've ever had in my life. Horrific stomach pains and vomiting for the entire day. I suspect it was the queso, but there may have been something wrong with the taco meat. Never again.***

It was okay. The service was good. The margaritas tasted like there was no alcohol as stated by all 3 of us. The food portions were plentiful and food was only okay. The environment was casual and average noise level. It was very college age filled which is expected. Overall it'd be fine for a quick low key dinner but not drinks.

This new Mexican restaurant is on the Levee near the Neon Cactus and Hodson's. The menu was very similar to that of Don Pablo's or Chi Chi's with several salad, nachos, burritos, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, etc. There were also a few more authentic items such as shrimp diablo (camarones ala diabla) and chiles rellenos (they call it Chiles Poblanos). We ordered the Martins enchiladas and the Chiles Poblanos (along with 2 Dos Equis the bill was $28 before tip). The food arrived quickly and was good and the portions were huge. The decor is nice and the large space is divided into several smaller spaces and was surprisingly quiet. Most of the people there on a Thursday night were Purdue students. I think that this place will be attractive to students because of the large portions, price, and drink specials. If you want a more varied and authentic menu, you should probably try one of the other Mexican places in town.

We had a large dinner party come in after dinner crowd had already cleared. There was very few other guests. Our waiter was nice when asking for order. It took about thirty minutes to get food to us. In meantime we didn't have any drink refills and the waiter had to be asked back to get more chips and salsa. Once our food was there, we were enjoying our time. However, even after refilling our drinks he never cleared our old cups off table. Once we were done eating we never saw him walk by to check on us. We waited another twenty minutes for him to bring check. I walked over to host station where 5-6 college age waiters were standing around talking. I asked for checks to be sent to our table. They said they would take care of it. I sat back down and not one of them did anything. My father went back over there and demanded they bring us our checks or we are leaving. They ran back and got our waiter. He gave us tickets and we left. Summary- decent food- very poor quality customer service.

I want to give this no stars. Absolutely awful. DJ was way too loud and not playing authentic music. No one came to us for 15 minutes. Didn't bring waters. Were out of chips and salsa. Our "margaritas" came without tequila because the waiter said they were "out of alcohol." No apology offered. Left hungry.

First impression-Nicely decorated but a nasty sewage smell. Don't know if that was the typical aroma. Didn't smell like Mexican food. Anyway, Seated fast, friendly staff. Ordered the Chimichanga's - very good, cheap dinner. I will go again.

Not a bad place to eat, but not a great place to eat. I don't know of much authentic Mexican places in the West Laf. area so this may be one of the only if not one of the handful in the area. My friends and I ate here before heading over to the Cactus. Loved the chips and salsa. I can't remember exactly what I got, but it had one with steak and cheese all over it (and I think I had one with chicken and cheese all over it). Anyways what I do remember is how bad the steak was. Do not get steak here in anything. It was very over-cooked. Chewy for days, and lots of fat on it. I didn't eat that much of it because frankly I couldn't. Other than that it was a good experience. I would come back, but I'd have to try something else.

If I could give it a negative review I would. We have eaten there several times when it first opened. But each time we have gone to eat there the service is just horrible. The last time we all went as a family together 10 of us. We all got up and walked out Service was terrible

The food is about what you would expect, not great but not disappointing. However, the service has been slow every time I was there except once when I "accidentally" flashed a hundred dollar bill.

I have eaten at Poblano's many times. You better hope they have Cholula (it is hit and miss whether they have it or if the server even looks for it)! The food is bland, if you get it. The last time I ate there we ordered at about 12:10, my co-workers got their lunch at 12:55, we had to be back to work by 1....They informed me at the same time that they didn't have the chicken wings that I had ordered, the best thing that I have had there. They attempted to make up for it by offering anything on the menu for free, but by that point I had to go and really wasn't interested anyhow. They handed me a bag as I was leaving with food in it that I passed on to another co-worker. I ended up going through the Taco Bell drive through. While I have had better service on prior visits, this was the final straw, I don't plan on going back. There are too many better Mexican restaurants in Lafayette.

Food is mediocre and the service is absolutely horrible! Both times I have been here it has taken FOREVER to order and get our food. Great margaritas though!!

Got that tamale. Not sure what it is supposed to be really but I was out in Cali a little while ago and I had one at a gas station. This was compare abler with summa dat brownish red sauce on top. Now don't get me wrong, that gas station had a good tamale and this one wasn't bad. Still don't know what tamales are

Poblanos has great service and reasonable prices for lunch. I have been there for lunch three times. The chips and salsa are a tasty treat while you wait for your meal. The food was well presented and my beef burrito was delicious. From order to serving was a short wait. The waiter was available, but not annoying. The restaurant was clean and tastefully decorated. The tables are well suited to conversation. ...and Grandma would be happy - the restrooms were clean.

I've been to Poblano's twice now since it opened. I've enjoyed it each time. It's nicely decorated, reasonably priced, and the drinks are cheap too. I enjoyed the food very much both times. Chips are served warm and the salsa has a good flavor. The first time I went I had the chicken fajitas. They were served sizzling and were seasoned well. The last time I went, I had the steak charro which I highly recommend. I ordered my steak medium rare and the kitchen hit it right on. The steak was served sizzling topped with queso, vegetables, and best of all super crispy bacon. Also, the steak was massive and accompanied by rice, beans, and guac. Poblano's is one of the better Mexican restaurants in West Lafayette in my opinion. If you're thinking of going to El Rodeo take a few extra steps and go to Poblano's instead.

  • Nolie P.

I'll keep this short. The food is the typical American version of Mexican. The price is fair, portions are big, the food is at your table leas than 10 minutes after ordering, and frer chips and salsa are at your table before you even order. I have to admit I was not impressed they used queso as the sauce for my enchiladas and not a red sauce or a mole. There is really nothing special which makes this place standout but I would visit again. Well, except for the loud music meant for college students. ...

    (3)
  • Andrew H.

Their chips and salsa was really good and free as well. When my basket was empty my waitress even brought me more, free of charge! Awesome service and the food was good and fair for it's price. I had the pollo loco and it was pretty good. Definitely will come back!

If you are looking for good Mexican food, this is not the place to go in Lafayette. (El Rodeo and Taco Rico are much better). However, if you want to get drunk for cheap before you go to Cactus on Thursday, this is the place for you. NONE of the food I've had was good including the chips and salsa, the tacos and a burrito. Also, the drinks are cheap but the beer is not always cold and the margaritas are definitely not the best (granted you only pay $2) The only thing it has going for it is cheap drinks, lots of TVS (although they never have the big sporting events on, you have to ask like 5 times) and proximity to Cactus. Service has been fine, nothing special, but fine.

  • Juan A.

Cheaper than most of the other Mexican restaurants and closer to campus. The food is not too bad but it's not the best by any means. The service is good but kind of slow. The best part I would say was the salsa and chips. I had the poblano platter that has a quesadilla, a tamale, and a enchilada. They tasted good but it could use some more flavor.

I've been to Poblanos about 3 times now and I've decided it's good food for a good bargain, especially at lunch. The chips come out warm and the salsa is tasty. The first time I went I had asada tacos, which arrived at the table in Taco Bell-esque hard shells, so I was not impressed. However, I would definitely recommend the beef tamale. It really was one of the best ones I have had in a long time. The first time I ordered one at Poblanos it wasn't as good, so whoever is in charge of making them now is doing something right! I would also recommend the chicken chimichanga. It is smothered in green chile and queso (surprising, but tasty). Overall a good experience each time I have been there, and would definitely recommend going during lunchtime.

Not happy with my experience here at all. I went hoping for a nice intimate dinner with my boyfriend. They ended up seating us in a closed off area with 15 annoying people celebrating a birthday. It was difficult to order drinks and it was like pulling teeth to even get a straw. Don't eat here if you're gluten free. They can't seem to understand the difference between a flour tortilla and a corn tortilla. When I finally got my food it wasn't even good. I'll never return to this restaurant.

We just happened upon Poblanos this evening and we are very glad we did! It is our new favorite Mexican restaurant! Although they have only been open a short time, they seem to really have their act together. The waitress was very nice and attentive and the other wait staff was friendly, too. We had no problems getting a table right away. Warm chips and salsa were brought out right away and the waitress took our drink orders. The food was really good and it came out pretty quickly! My husband had the shrimp fajitas and they were delicious. I had the Poblanos sampler and everything was great, especially the fresh tamales. Older son had the kid's burrito (beef) and taco combination and he loved them both and cleaned his plate. Younger son had the chicken fingers and fries because he wasn't in the mood for Mexican food. They were very good, too. We hope Poblanos is very successful in West Lafayette. We will be back soon!

My friends and I wanted to make Wednesdays our Poblanos night because of their $1.99 margarita special. We just made our second time there, our last. The first time we went there I had fajitas and they weren't bad, but they like to dump sauce on everything else they serve, I was looking forward to my tamale last night and it was drenched in this nasty sauce. The margaritas are so acidic and salty you need 5 tums and a gallon of water to get through a small one.The waiter pulled our straws out of his pocket (thanks for the extra flavor) and not an apron. The free chips and salsa is the best part of the experience. AND NO HORCHATA, which is a must for me. I bumped up my rating by one star because of it's cleanliness. The floors are not sticky, bathrooms are kept and the overall dining area is well managed. Go to Taco Rico.

The atmosphere was nice, the chips and salsa were pretty good, but due to the absolutely terrible service my friends and I received, we will not be returning. We waited 55 minutes after being told "15-20 minutes or more." No big deal--it was a Saturday night, we understand. When we received our food, 5 of the 7 of our orders were completely messed up. One meal was brought out, then 15 minutes later most of the others finally arrived. The last meal never arrived. My quesadilla did not even have any cheese in it and my friends' order of queso never arrived. Two other meals had the wrong ingredients or were the wrong meals altogether. When I (nicely) spoke to the manager about it and explained all of the problems we experienced, he offered me (only me, not the other 4 of us whose meals were ruined) 10% off of my meal. When I was not satisfied with that, he begrudgingly offered 10% off on everyone's meals. Considering how patient and understanding we tried to be with the terrible service we received, I do not feel that the management of this establishment handled the situation appropriately.

Wow, I wish I could rate the restaurant higher. We went on a Thursday evening, maybe the cook is better on the weekend. The Margaritas we ordered were as expected, wonderful & refreshing. I had seen their Fajita Quesadilla pictured on a flyer and ordered it. It looked nothing like the photo. I had to place the lettuce on myself even though the description said "a layer of crispy lettuce." The tomato was a slice of tomato, I guess you have to cut it up yourself. The steak had NO Fajita flavor what so ever! It was bland greasy chewy steak. Edible but no flavor. I could not pick it up to eat it because it was soggy with grease. Person with me ordered a meal with steak and got the same bland greasy stuff. Chips and salsa where nothing original either. If we return it will be for drinks only. However, there are other places in the area that we would choose to drink at before this place. Sorry Poblanos, I wanted to like you:-(

very good food sometimes there is trouble with the person taking orders sometimes depending on who takes your order - he might understand specially if you eat vegetarian food or are allergic to mushrooms etc their cheese bean dip is wow they should also make FRESH tortillas like Don pablos - if they make fresh tortillas they will be top of the notch Very hard working staff

  • Matt T.

Vegetarians beware. Look out for surprise meat in your food. I ordered veggie fajitas and my friend got the veg chimichangas. Well as it turned out, mine had beef and hers had chicken. I get that you cook all the food on one grill, but come on, that's just sloppy cooking. The rest of the food was alright, nothing special. If you want decent Mexican food, skip this place and go to Mi Cabanita instead.

  • Stacy S.

If you're in the mood for bland flavorless food head to Poblano's. The only thing ordered to my table that was even remotely edible was the chips and queso. The chips tasted like store bought Totino's and the salsa was so bland that my one year old was eating it out of the jar. I ordered a salad with fajita chicken that was basically flavorless. The chicken came white and looked boiled. It was so bad that I sent it back. The beef quesadilla that I ordered for the baby came with a pile of flavorless ground beef and barely and cheese. On top of the bad food, the atmosphere was bizarre. When we got there for a very early dinner at 5:30pm there was Spanish music quietly playing similar to many Mexican restaurants. About 20 minutes in all of a sudden the music starts blaring Pit Bull and it continues like that the rest of the time. The whole experience was bizarre. As we left I saw lots of people waiting to eat but they were all college students with their cups for the Cactus. I guess that says something about he place. I'm just not sure what. I would recommend pretty much any other Mexican place in town over Poblano's.

We love coming here as s family. Two of us are vegetarian, and one is a carnivore still. We can all find something here that appeals to us. Our current favorite is veggie fajitas. Best fajitas in town! They have broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower in addition to peppers, unions, and mushrooms. Wait staff are very friendly and attentive. Nice atmosphere. We highly recommend.

Though, the food maybe fine, the service is absolutely horrible. A Business that cannot own up to its own mistakes and actively tries to avoid customers that attempt to get the item that they ordered and Poblanos failed to provide, or if the customers to get a quick response from the restaurant. This is a bad Business and should not be ordered from until their service improves and that they actually own up to the mistakes they made. For me for example, i had a friend order cheese dip for 4.59 dollars, and i attempted to call and reach someone for 8 calls. The 2nd call, they actually picked up and hung up on me without so much as a word to me. and all the rest they refused to pick up the phone. This is theft.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
